Lee Man Fong 'Early pasar's charm'

Lee Man Fong

For many years we have specialized in paintings from the former Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. Especially since 2007 we have really become a global player. In this blog I will show you one of the most beautiful works that we have sold in the past.

Shown here is 'Early pasar's charm' (the charm of the early market). The painting was made by Lee Man Fong, later court painter to Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. Man Fong made this painting around 1949, presumably in the Netherlands. He lived in the Netherlands between 1946 and 1952.

The artist made most of the paintings in the typical, elongated form of Chinese scroll paintings. Often 100 x 50 cm, but also 120 x 60 cm. The most chosen subjects were pigeons and fish. This painting is special in its ouvre. Not only because of the subject, but also because of the size: 90 x 124 cm. In general, 'width' paintings by Man Fong are more valuable than 'length' paintings.

Auction result (2007): above €100,000
